The Gas-zette is your place for information on the world of propane and why it is the best energy source available to meet all of your comfort needs.
In 1910, a Pittsburgh motor car owner walked into chemist Dr. Walter Snelling's office, complaining that the gallon of gasoline he had purchased was half a gallon by the time he got home. He thought the government should look into why consumers were being cheated because the gasoline was evaporating at a rapid and expensive rate. Dr. Snelling took up the challenge and discovered the evaporating gases were propane, butane and other hydrocarbons.
Using coils from an old hot-water heater and other miscellaneous pieces of laboratory equipment he could find, Dr. Snelling built a still that could separate the gasoline into its liquid and gaseous components.
Today, propane gas is an $8 billion industry in the United States alone and is still growing.

- Energy Source: Propane. Cost Per Million BTU's:
A BTU stands for "British Thermal Unit." It is defined as the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Your home probably consumes between 25 and 100 million BTU per year.
- If you consumed 50 million BTU's in one year from Electricity, your cost would be $1,270.50.
- If you consumed 50 million BTU's in one year from Propane, your cost would be $548.50.
Propane gas grills today are better than ever!
When grilling, use a grill fueled by propane gas, which releases fewer harmful emissions into the environment than charcoal grills. It's less expensive, too. A cookout with propane costs only about 24 cents - that's about 80 percent less than what you would spend to have a charcoal cookout!
If, like 8 million other Americans, you use propane gas to fuel your home appliances, here are some helpful tips from the National Propane Gas Association for preparing your house before you leave on vacation.
If leaving for two to three weeks, the following procedures are recommended for your various propane-fueled appliances:
- Gas boiler/furnace: Turn the thermostat to a low setting
- Water Heater: Set at the lowest setting on thermostat
- Air conditioner: Set thermostat to a high setting, keeping plants and pets in mind
- Pool heater: Turn it off at the burner switch
- Room heater: Turn it off at the thermostat
- Gas range/oven: Make sure burner knobs are turned off
- Refrigerator: Keep running as usual and remove food that may spoil while you are away
It is also a good idea to have a friend, neighbor, or gas technician check on your home while you're out of town. Be sure to leave the name and number of your propane supplier with the person checking on your home in case assistance is needed.
Clean burning propane can make a big difference in the environment. One of the goals of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments is to reduce pollutants, and propane gas is cited as one of the solutions to pollution.
For residential heating, carbon dioxide emissions, which cause global warming, can be reduced up to 75 percent by using propane gas instead of electricity, which is generated at coal-fired plants.
Besides just reducing global warming, by using Chiles's Propane instead of coal, oil, gasoline or electricity in industry and home, you can help combat acid rain, the "Greenhouse Effect," urban smog and the thinning ozone layer - all without sacrificing daily convenience!
